Description:

Reportedly, 5,802 Model 1847 Cavalry Musketoons were manufactured between 1848-1859, with many subsequently arsenal altered to different configurations. These musketoons were used by the army in conflicts with Native Americans in the 1850s and during the Civil War. The Cavalry model features a ramrod retention swivel and a saddle bar and ring on the left side. The lock is marked with eagle and shield at the center above "US" with "SPRING/FIELD/1851" at the tail, and the matching date "1851" on the barrel tang, "V/P/eagle head" proofs on the left quarter of the breech, "US" marked on the buttplate, with an oval script "ESA" inspection cartouche stamped on the left stock flat of Springfield Armory's Master Armorer Erskine S. Allin.

Rating Definition:

Fine as cleaned to a bright on the iron surfaces with some scattered light pitting, clear markings on the lock and breech, and bright golden patina on the brass. Stock is fine as re-oiled, with discreet filled in repairs at some of the edges, some light scratches and dents, and a defined cartouche. Mechanically excellent.
