Description:

Manufactured in 1918, and falling within the 316,512 to 333,292 serial range listed on page 520 of "U.S. Military Automatic Pistols 1894-1920" by Meadows as a shipment of 16,380 pistols sent to the ordnance office of Bush Terminal in Brooklyn, New York, on June 16, 1918, to be sent overseas for issuance to the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). The same page also notes a small 18 pistol shipment in the 297,102 to 322,123 range sent to the U.S. Small Arms Proving Ground in Springfield, Massachusetts, in May of 1918, but there is no documentation connecting this pistol to that shipment. Features fixed oval blade front and notch rear sights, blued barrel with "P" and "H" marked on top and "5" on the bottom, long smooth trigger, checkered slide release and thumb safety, short grip safety, wide checkered hammer, and a smooth straight mainspring housing with a lanyard loop on the base. The slide bears the two-line, two-block patent dates and address on the left with the circled "rampant colt" behind the slide serrations, along with model and U.S. Army nomenclature on the right and "H" marked at the top of the hammer recess. The left side of the frame has a U.S. property marking and "eagle head/S14" inspection mark, with serial number on the right. Fitted with a pair of diamond pattern checkered walnut grips and an unmarked two-tone magazine with pinned base.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retaining 60% plus original brushed blue finish with light edge wear, thinning on the grip straps, and splotches of grey to brown patina breaking through on unprotected areas of the frame and slide. Grips are exceptionally fine with mild handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
