Description:

This is a rare example of a Weimar era 1925 dated Simson & Co. Suhl Luger pistol, serial number 28. These were issued to both the Weimar Military and Police units up through the late 1920s before Hitler came into power and abolished/closed the Simson Company. This example has the unit marking "K.S.158." on the front grip strap, indicating this is the 158th weapon issued to the Reichswehr Kavallerie (Cavalry) School. This exact pistol is photographed on pages 69 and 70 of the book "Weimar and Early Nazi Lugers and their Accessories" by Jan C. Still, in which one of the photograph captions states, "The soldiers of the Reichswehr underwent intensive training and formed the core and leaders of the formidable World War II German Army." The lot is also accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from noted author Jan C. Still's family verifying it was in his personal collection. The top of the chamber is dated "1925" and the front toggle is marked "SIMSON & Co/SUHL". The right side of the barrel extension has several small "eagle/6" acceptance/firing proofs along with the small Weimar Eagle acceptance proof. "Eagle/6" proofs are also stamped on various components, with an "eagle/46" stamp on the base of the magazine. All matching visible serial numbers on various components including the interior of both checkered walnut grip panels and aluminum base of the magazine with nickel finished body. Includes an early Police type Luger holster stamped "U.R.20./1910/(5E)" on the front of the flap, and maker marked "J.M.ECKART/ULM." on the front below the flap. This holster is the scarce pattern that has the additional flap added over the takedown tool pouch and a slot for the small pin-punch. Provenance: The Jan C. Still Collection; Property of a Gentleman

Rating Definition:

Fine, retains 70% faded original blue finish with smooth brown and gray patina on the balance, scattered light freckling/surface pitting, and defined markings in the metal. 50% of the original straw colors remain on the small components. Grips are excellent with distinct checkering and a few minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Holster is fine with some light age related cracking and handling marks. This is a fine example of a rare two-digit Simson Luger formerly out of the noted Jan C. Still collection, worthy of any advanced Luger collection!
