Description:

This is an exceptional, as issued example of a U.S. Springfield Model 1861 rifle-musket. The Model 1861 was the primary shoulder arm used by Union infantry during the Civil War. Most of these Model 1861s saw heavy use in virtually all of the major battles of the war. An exceptional example such as this is rarely encountered and serves as a true time capsule. Lockplate is marked "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" with an eagle and shield and dated "1862" on the tail. Matching "1862" date appears on top of the barrel flat, and correct "V/P/eagle head" proofs appear on the left flat. The left stock flat proudly displays two crisp inspection cartouches ("ESA" and "HSH"). Included is a correct "US" marked socket bayonet with an "S" sub-inspection mark. Provenance: The Bob Noske Collection; The David Aroh Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus, retaining nearly all of the attractive national armory bright finish. The two leaf folding rear sight and percussion nipple retain nearly all of their original blue finish. The trigger shows the correct original grey casehardening colors. The stock is also excellent plus with some scattered very minor handling marks, all of its rich oil finish remaining, some raised grain, very attractive wood grain, tight fit to metal, and sharp flats and edges. Cartouches are very crisp. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet matches the condition of the gun. This is an outstanding example of the highly desirable U.S. Springfield Model 1861 rifle-musket and would be nearly impossible to improve upon!
