Description:

Manufactured in 1911, the Model 1905 pistol was a direct predecessor to the Model 1911 with a total production of approximately 6,100 from 1905 to 1911, making them quite scarce. The included factory letter confirms the current configuration, grips not listed, and shipment to the famous El Paso, Texas firm Shelton Payne Arms Co. on 22 February 1912 in an order of five guns. Shelton Payne Arms Co. notoriously sold arms to both sides in the Mexican Revolution and is the retailer that general George S. Patton ordered his famous engraved Colt Single Action Army Revolver from. The left side of the slide has the standard two-line, two-block patent dates and address, followed by the circled Rampant Colt behind the serrations. The right side of the slide has the standard two-line caliber marking. The serial number is located on the left side of the frame above the trigger guard bow. The upper left trigger guard bow bears the Colt "VP" triangle proof and the lower is marked with a "W". This example has the later style spurred hammer with half-cock notch and casehardened finish. The remainder of the gun is finished in the high-polish blue, except for the trigger, extractor, grip screws and magazine release, which are nitre blue. It is fitted with standard blade and notch sights, as well as what appear to be the original walnut grips which were originally checkered but were period carved with relief steer heads on both panels. Includes a Shelton Payne Arms Co. marked, "Mexican loop" type leather holster that has the maker's mark at the top near the throat.

Rating Definition:

Very good, retains 20% of the original blue finish in sheltered areas and traces of original nitre blue on small parts with the balance having thinned to mostly a smooth grey patina and some scattered patches of light pitting, typical of a holstered Texas carry gun. The period carved grips are also very good with numerous scattered light handling marks and a series of minor dings at the top of the right panel. Mechanically fine. The holster is fine with the retention loop partially torn and some mild wear. A desirable, El Paso shipped, Shelton Payne Arms sold, Colt Military Model 1905 pistol that truly has the look of an Old West Texas carry gun!
