Description:

This rifle was built by the late gunmaker Louis Smith (1927-2000) of Jonesboro, Tennessee, clearly with inspiration from Nicholas Beyer (see rifle No. 91 on page 235 of "Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in Its Golden Age" by Kindig). It features a tapered octagon barrel with dovetailed blade and notch sights, "Louis Smith" signed on top, and scroll engraving and an inlaid silver band at the breech; Siler lock with some light engraving, adjustable double set triggers, brass furniture, distinctive bird patchbox finial, toe plate with heart shaped piercing and floral finial, silver oval wrist escutcheon, man in the moon silver inlay on the cheekpiece, and beautifully figured curly maple stock with wire inlays by the barrel tang, molding, and raised relief and incised carving, including a bird motif on the left side of the butt that coordinates with the patchbox. Includes both a wood and a nylon ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with essentially all of the original brown finish, mostly bright furniture, dark aged patina on the silver, crisp engraving and carving, and generally only minor age and storage related wear overall, including some oxidation mainly on the trigger group. Mechanically excellent. Overall, a very attractive and traditional rifle.
