Description:

This pistol from c. 1720-1750 by John Hawkins has a smoothbore, three-stage "cannon" barrel with a lug for removal with a barrel wrench (absent). The underside of the frame at the breech is stamped "HAWKINS" over London proofs flanking the "crown/IH" maker's mark. The top also has "LONDON", and there is some scroll and foliate engraving. The stock has shell carving at the top, and the mounts are silver, including a classic grotesque mask pommel cap with small hallmarks.

Rating Definition:

Very good overall with gray patina and minor pitting on the iron, small chip at the top of the frizzen, attractive aged patina on the silver, some scrapes and faint cracks visible on the grip, and crisp carving and engraving. Mechanically fine.
