Description:

Manufactured in 1916, as one of a limited number of U.S. Model 1903 rifles authorized for sale (at cost) to private members of the National Rifle Association (N.R.A.) through the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice, a precursor to the Director of Civilian Marksmanship. Such rifles were only offered for from 1910 until America's entry into World War I in April 1917. Features fixed blade with front and folding ladder (with 2,850 yard top notch) rear sights with stamped front sight hood, dished windage and elevation knob, serrated trigger, "H" marked bayonet lug, "I 8" marked straight handle bolt, "S A/(ordnance bomb)/1-16" marked barrel, and milled triggerguard assembly bearing the "(flaming bomb)/N.R.A." marking used to distinguish the rifles from those belonging to the U.S. government. With an oil quenched casehardened receiver, safety, and magazine cut-off, along with all blued milled components that include the barrel band, bolt, trigger guard, and floorplate. Fitted with an oiled American walnut "S" profile grasping grove stock with single reinforcing bolt, boxed "J.S.A." (J. Sumnar Adams) cartouche, checkered trapdoor steel buttplate, and "22" above circled script "P" firing proof under the wrist, along with a "high hump" handguard with proper rear sight clearance cut.

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retaining 97% original oil quenched casehardened and 90% original blue finishes with minor spotting primarily on the bands and swivels, thinning with spots of brown and grey patina on the front band and trigger housing/magazine floor plate, plum coloration the barrel and rear sight base, and otherwise limited edge wear or scuffs. The stock is also excellent with attractive original oiled grain, a few slight compression marks in the forearm, but otherwise limited handling marks and crisp marking and grasping grooves. Mechanically excellent. A standout example of a U.S. Springfield M1903 N.R.A. sales rifle that would be difficult to improve upon!
