Description:

These were standard commercial Winchester Model 1200 shotguns produced during the late 1960s and early-mid 1970s that were purchased and adapted for the military with a bayonet lug/heat shield and U.S. marked. By the time most of these were delivered to the U.S. military, the Vietnam War was nearing its end, and very few are believed to have made it overseas to Southeast Asia. Some of these remained in service and saw use in Grenada, Panama, the Persian Gulf, Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan. Most were destroyed after their service, leading to their scarcity today, with sparse government records of contract deliveries. This example is one a small amount known with an "L" prefix serial number, and is wearing a label on the right of the buttstock that reads "PROPERTY OF/TVA POLICE/561347" which indicates it was in the inventory of the Tennessee Valley Authority Police Department, likely after military service. The barrel is equipped with a six hole pattern heat shield with bayonet lug adapter, marked with part number "11686389" on the left, that is secured to the barrel with three screws. The bayonet lug on this shotgun is sized for the M1917 bayonet, which remained in service through the time this gun would have been in use. The barrel is marked as cylinder choke and with 2 3/4 inch chamber, with "U.S." above the standard markings. Black anodized alloy frame, parkerized barrel, heat shield/bayonet adapter, magazine tube, loading gate and trigger housing, with a bright bolt. Fitted with an extended forearm and pistol grip stock with a hard rubber buttplate. 14 inch length of pull. A small label with inventory number "683" is on the rear sling swivel. Includes a green canvas web sling, a parkerized M1917 bayonet with black plastic grip panels and a green plastic scabbard, and a March 1970 dated 10-count sealed box of Federal Cartridge Corp. XM162 12 gauge 00 buckshot. Information on Winchester Model 1200 trench and riot shotguns can be found on pages 177-180 and 189-191 of "Complete Guide to United States Military Combat Shotguns" by Bruce Canfield.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retains 99% arsenal refurbished parkerized finish, 98% black finish on the receiver, with some light handling marks. Wood is also very fine with some light scratches and handling marks and crisp defined edges. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet and ammunition box are both excellent.
