Description:

Boss & Co. is one of the most highly regarded fine arms makers in the world and has long been an industry leader, embodying the words of author Donald Dallas, who put it ever so eloquently by titling his book on the company "Boss & Co.: Builder of Best Guns Only". This gun was built circa 1962-1970 per Nigel Brown and features blued steel barrels with a single bead sight on the matted flat solid rib, "BOSS & Co." and "13 CORK STREET LONDON W1" signed on the right and left tubes respectively, single band of engraving at the breech, correct period London proof marks, and 2 3/4 inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels are fitted to a handsome casehardened sidelock action displaying highly attractive bouquet and scroll engraving surrounding "BOSS & Co." signatures on either lockplate and "BOSS'S PATENT/No. 22894." on the underside before spilling off of the action onto the toplever, triggerguard, and both tangs. The gun features bushed firing pins, gold centerline cocking indicators on either lockplate, a right hand roller triggerguard, and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid "SAFE" indicator. The gun is mounted with a lightly figured and multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings and Anson button release as well as a nicely figured straight grip stock with teardrop carved drop points, blank gold inscription oval, and a checkered bare butt. Included is an oak and leather takedown case with Boss & Co. trade label and a nickel oiler. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed and measured .615 inches; choke constriction .010/.017 inches; minimum wall thickness .036/.037 inches; 1 3/8 inch drop at comb; 2 1/16 inch drop at heel; 14 7/16 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 5 lbs. 12 oz.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall, retaining 97% original blue finish on the barrels, the trigger guard has been refinished, 50% original case colors with some muting and the balance a silver patina, some thinning of the blue near the breech, some scattered minor spotting, light handling evidence, a few scratches in the wood, and sharp checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent. The case handle is detached on one side: otherwise, the case is very good. A great chance at a fine sub-gauge gun from one of England's finest makers!
