Description:

Manufactured in 1907, this is a fine example of a highly optioned, special order, Winchester deluxe Model 1886 rifle. The included factory letter lists the rifle in .45-70 caliber with a 26 inch, half octagon, smokeless/nickel steel barrel, 2/3 length magazine, extra lightweight configuration, plain trigger, Lyman combination and flat top sights, and a checkered, pistol grip, English walnut stock with a shotgun butt fitted with a Silvers recoil pad. It also lists receipt at the warehouse on 2 July 1907, shipment on 9 July 1907, and another received in warehouse date of 5 February 1908 with the additional notation of "22 inches". The meaning of the final notation is unclear, as the lightweight profile 26 inch barrel is clearly original to the rifle. This combination of special order features make this rifle very rare, but two specifically are extremely scarce. John T. Madl's survey of Model 1886 carbine records indicates that only two in the ledgers were ordered with the Silvers recoil pad, indicating a similar rarity in 1886 rifles. The English walnut wood is also incredibly scarce, with only three Model 1894s ordered with it out of 353,999 records, a ratio that is likely similar during Model 1886 production. The rifle has the standard Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and receiver, the standard two-line address and patent dates on the top barrel flat, and the caliber marking at the breech. The upper tang is marked with the three-line model and trademark information, while the lower tang has the serial number and patent dates. The left side of the lower tang is marked "386 XX", with "386" repeated in the stock inlet. It is fitted with a Lyman combination front sight, elevation adjustable flat top notch rear sight, and a peep sight mounted on the upper tang. It is mounted with a very nicely figured, H-pattern checkered, English walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with a shotgun butt fitted with a red Silvers recoil pad. Provenance: The James D. Conaway Collection, The Lewis & Leyton Yearout Collection, The David L. DeLullo Jr. Collection

Rating Definition:

Fine, retains 40% of the faded original blue finish and traces of original case colors on the lever and hammer, with the balance mostly a grey-brown patina, a few patches of light spotting, and a series of light dings on the left of the receiver. The refinished wood is very good with numerous scattered minor handling marks and well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent. A fine Model 1886 with a rare set of special order features!
