Description:

This revolver was manufactured in 1853 but evidently remained on hand at Colt until the outbreak of the Civil War. Greg Lampe indicated that during Charles Pate's research for his book on Colt Dragoon he found this revovler listed in Colt's records as rejected by U.S. Army inspectors and sold to J.P. Moore's Sons on August 20, 1861, in a shipment of 28 guns. It was purchased by Arnold Chernoff in the 1970s and sold to Chet Burnoswki who owned it until 2000. The revolver features a German silver blade front sight, the one-line "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY-" marking on top of the barrel reading from the muzzle towards the breech, the Texas Rangers and Comanche fight scene on the cylinder along with "MODEL U.S.M.R." and "COLT'S PATENT", "COLTS/PATENT/U.S." on the left side of the frame, "V" and "G" on the left side of the trigger guard, the matching serial number on the various components, and "K" on the upper left of the grip and on the right side of the hammer, back strap, and trigger guard. The revovler comes in a fitted mahogany case with rose colored velvet lining, wrapped Eley Bros. cap tin, martial pattern powder flask with slanted charger, L-shaped combination tool, brass ball/bullet mold, and balls and bullets. Provenance: The Arnold Chernoff Collection; The Chet Burnowski Collection; The Greg Lampe Collection

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with 90% plus original blue finish on the barrel, 60% original blue finish and a distinct roll scene on the cylinder, 95% plus soft original case colors, 98% plus of the original silver plating, four extremely small dimples on the cylinder, and minimal age and handling related wear. The grip is also excellent and has nearly all of the original high gloss varnish finish, minor scatches and dings, and slight edge wear. Mechanically excellent. The case is very fine and has mild age and storage related wear. The accessories are also very fine and have minimal wear.
