Description:

Dutch flintlock muskets were imported into the American colonies during the 18th century and are documented as used by the Patriots during the American Revolution. Benjamin Franklin aided Massachusetts with the purchase of thousands of Dutch muskets. The Dutch Type III muskets are described on pages 389-395 of George D. Moller's book "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume I". Moller wrote, "The salient features of the Dutch (Type III) musket are: (1) the barrel is retained by three or four bands; (2) a lock with a flat, bevel-edged plate and cock; and (3) brass furniture." This example has a bottom mounted bayonet lug at the muzzle, a blade front sight mounted on the rear strap of the front barrel band, "P" stamped on the buttplate towards the heel, an iron ramrod, two "T" stamps and "L•B" below the vent, "CC" on the lock by the frizzen spring, and "E•C" or "E•O" on the inside of the lock plate. The socket bayonet is marked "No1123".

Rating Definition:

Good with a mix of dark brown and gray patina, mild pitting concentrated at the breech, some chips and cracks in the refinished stock, and general moderate wear. Mechanically fine.
