Description:

When sold previously from W. Keith Neal's famous collection, this approximately 35 pound blunderbuss was noted as "the biggest of the imposing blunderbusses in the Palling Collection." It was also noted as likely by I. Bulles of Birmingham c. 1750. The gun is also discussed on page 119 of "Great British Gunmakers 1740-1790" by Neal and D.H.L. Back and is seen in a photograph of Neal's gun room. The bore of the massive two-stage brass barrel is approximately 1 inch at the breech and flares out to 3 1/2 inches at the muzzle. The rounded lock is nearly 7 inches in length and has no visible markings. The mounts are brass and feature foliate and border engraving, including an acorn finial on the pierced sideplate. A W. Keith Neal Collection label is tied to the trigger guard. Comes with a metal display stand. Provenance: The Palling Collection; The W. Keith Neal Collection; Property of a Gentleman

Rating Definition:

Fine with attractive aged patina on the massive brass barrel and mounts, distinct engraving, mottled dark gray patina on the lock, and general mild overall wear. The stock is very good and has some cracks and general scrapes and dings. Mechanically fine.
