Description:

Manufactured c. mid-18th century, likely in Carlsbad. The smoothbore octagonal to round barrel has a rounded brass blade front sight and is decorated with gold inlaid scroll and dot designs on the breech section. The flat beveled lock has a faceted pan and is engraved with scrollwork and a scene of two riders exchanging pistol shots. The chased gilt brass side plate has a complicated scene of a boar, three dogs, a man on horseback, another running with a spear and a third running with a sword, all in a forest scene. The butt plate shows an armored figure with shield and spear and martial trophies. The trigger guard shows a mounted figure with a sword on the bow and foliate patterns and martial trophies on the finial. A gilt brass inlay surrounds the barrel tang and has sculpted engraving to match the other pieces and is itself surrounded by raised relief scroll and shell carving. The full-length stock has additional molding and carving, and it and the ramrod have light horn tips.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel has about half of the original blue finish and retains nearly all of the gold inlay. Strong traces of original gilt remain on the brass mounts. The stock is fine and has some faint cracks, light scratches and dings, and crisp carving. Mechanically fine.
