Description:

Crafted during the Victorian era, this ornate dagger and scabbard appears to be a tribute piece to Henry VIII. It measures 19 inches overall with a 12 5/8 inch spear point blade that appears unmarked. The guard and pommel are of the same expertly relief carved antique ivory as the scabbard and feature leafy scroll on the guard and a bun shaped crown pommel. The grip is wrapped in thin linen and secured by small decorative brass tacks. The scabbard is also extensively relief carved, work that was without a doubt executed by a master of their craft. On the front side of the scabbard is a bust of Henry VIII at the top with banners below it marked as such. Below that is a crown and the royal coat of arms. Further down is a grotesque mask with a head topped with crenellations, a floral decorated riser, a shield and stand of arms, and another grotesque mask at the tip. The back side of the scabbard is wrapped with the same linen as the grip and secured with similar brass tacks.

Rating Definition:

Fine, the sharpened blade showing mostly a bright grey patina with some light evidence of cleaning and some scattered light pitting. The linen grip and backing of the scabbard are good with some mild deterioration and loss showing the wood beneath, but otherwise remaining secure. The antique ivory shows an attractively aged tone overall with some scattered hairline age cracks. A very attractive English royal themed dagger!
