Manufactured relatively late in the war, the "kriegsmodell" 98 could be seen as a predecessor of the "volkswaffen/volksgewehr" last ditch weapons, attempts to streamline the manufacturing process, reducing the amount of detail work required to put out a working weapon. In addition to eliminating the bayonet lug, this example also has the rear sight replaced with a simplified sheet metal leaf with a fixed battle range notch sight. Fitted with a hooded blade front sight, with the barrel marked "dot/13" in a shield, "Mod.98/swp45" on the receiver ring, matching numbered bolt, and "qnw" and "byf" on the stamped triggerguard and floorplate, respectively. The barrel bands are stamped sheet metal secured with screws, with a brown leather sling and a cupped steel buttplate.

Excellent metal, with 95% of the original blue and phosphate finishes, showing some minor spotting on the barrel and sight hood, a plum patina on the bolt catch spring, and mild handling marks overall. The phosphate components show some areas of brown patina. The stock is very fine, with mild scuffing and dings, and a pair of filled holes on the underside suggesting that a set of sporting style sling studs had been installed and later removed. Mechanically excellent.
