Description:

Offered here is quite possibly the most impressive and only E. Remington & Sons exhibition wall gun display cabinet ever offered at Rock Island Auction Company! This exhibition display cabinet was from the second half of the 1800s and was built for a factory display. The consignor indicated it previously had a tag noting the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia and came from the Carl Press Collection. It is also known that E. Remington & Sons had a walk in shop in New York City, at a separate location from their factory in Ilion, in which a large gun display cabinet such as this could have resided, likely showing off an offering of their finest firearms. "E. REMINGTON & SONS/MANUFACTURERS/NEW YORK" address painted on the glass display window in gold letters with black and red shaded accents. Two ornate raised relief carved Native American heads are on the front edges of the door with four ornate raised relief carved lion heads at the corners. The display door is held in place by four metal latches, consisting of two on each side (one absent). The interior has a green felt lined backing, with various metal hanging hooks. The display cabinet stands 6 feet tall (72 inches) by 46 1/2 inches wide at the base, with the top piece being 49 1/2 inches wide, 4 3/4 inches deep in the glass display area, with the top piece being 6 3/4 inches deep. Provenance: Remington Factory; Carl Press Collection; Property of a Gentleman

Rating Definition:

Fine overall with an attractive totally original naturally aged appearance, some storage handling marks, some holes visible in the interior felt backing, one absent section of trim visible on the top front of the face, and nearly all of the painted E. Remington & Sons address on the excellent original glass. Quite an extraordinary piece of American firearms history!
