Description:

In the 18th century to early 20th century, canes became a very popular symbol of social and economic status as well as sophistication. By that time, the greyhound dog had been around for centuries, and it was often associated with royalty, nobility, and the upper echelons of society. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, the popularity of greyhound racing began to take hold, just as canes reached their peak as a fashion accessory. The grip of this example is antique ivory, relief carved in the shape of a greyhound's head fitted with glass eyes. The grip is joined to the shaft with a silver band marked "STERLING" and inscribed with the initials "G.M.L." The smooth shaft is of fruitwood tipped with dark horn, and the cane measures approximately 31 1/2 inches overall.

Rating Definition:

Very good, the grip shows an attractively aged tone with some hairline age cracks and minor chips on the tips of the ears. The silver band shows an attractively aged patina. The shaft is fine with some mild handling wear.
