Description:

This is a beautiful example of a very late production Colt New Service revolver with Grade B (approximately half coverage) of an Colt factory engraved pattern attributed to, or from the shop of Wilbur A. Glahn, that is fitted with a set of smooth ivory grips. The right pistol grip has been carved with the script initials of "JMW" on the lower edges. The pistol was produced in late 1925 and currently does not have a factory letter however it would certainly enhance the value of the revolver if one was obtained. In addition it has a three digit factory repair number "461" stamped on the lower right side of the frame, under the rear of the barrel and the face of the cylinder and if researched correctly could certainly shed some light on the pistol. Also, a "question mark" style factory rework stamp is present above the right rear trigger guard. (It is stamped through the finish leading one to believe this is the original finish.) The engraving pattern is a vine and scroll pattern with most of the engraving centered on the sides and top strap of the frame, cylinder, and barrel since the grip straps are factory checkered on these models. The overage coverage is well executed with a light punch dot back ground for shading. The revolver is fitted with smooth ivory grips with Colt silver medallions at the top of each one. The top of the barrel has the two-line patent address markings of "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A. over PAT'D AUG 5 1884, JUNE 5 1900, JULY 4 1905", with an engraving pattern on each side of the markings. The left side of the barrel is marked in very small lettering "NEW SERVICE RUSSIAN AND S&W SPECIAL .44 ". The Rampant Colt trademark is located in a panel on the left side of the frame behind the cylinder catch, also intertwined with an engraving pattern. The serial number is stamped on the inside of the frame well and the inside of the cylinder crane. The pistol has the all polish blued finish to include the trigger and hammer with the sides of the hammer being factory polished. Fewer than 75 New Service revolvers are factory documented as having been engraved, consequently regardless of the coverage this is a very scarce New Service revolver.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus with 99% of the factory blued finish with just a slight cylinder drag line, probably from just rotating the cylinder. The grips are in excellent condition with just a few minor age cracks on the bottom of each one. Just a superb looking pistol and one that would certain benefit with a little factory research.
