Description:

One-of-a-kind, experimental Colt New Service Revolver with six-inch barrel. In 1932, Colt Superintendent Fred Moore attempted to design a more powerful cartridge for law enforcement and hunting. Legendary Colt firearms expert J.H. "Fitz" Fitzgerald was an advocate of the .41 Colt cartridge. Moore had Remington manufacture a limited quantity of ".41 Colt Special" cartridges with 210 grain bullets of several different designs and a velocity of approximately 900 feet-per-second. Colt manufactured two .41 caliber New Service revolvers to test the feasibility of the .41 Special cartridge. One of these revolvers had a six-inch barrel and was not serial numbered and the other, No. 340216, had a four-inch barrel. The revolver has the Colt high polish commercial blue finish. The sides of the hammer are bright and the top is niter blue. The trigger has a niter blue finish. The butt is fitted with a casehardened lanyard loop. The grips are checkered walnut with silver Colt Medallions. The left side of the barrel has the caliber designation: "NEW SERVICE 41". The top of the barrel is marked with standard two line address and 1884, 1905 and 1926 patent dates. "1" is stamped on the underside of the barrel just ahead of the frame and on the rear face of the cylinder beneath the ejector. There are no serial number markings in the usual location on the inside of the crane and frame. The usual assembler's marks and Colt "VP/Triangle" proof marks an not present on the left side of the trigger guard. This revolver was featured on the cover of the Summer 2001 issue of THE RAMPANT COLT and was the subject of a second article in the Fall 2003 issue. A one-of-a-kind, fully documented example of the rarest Colt New Service variation. This is an ultimate Colt DA Revolver for the most advanced Colt collection.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The revolver retains more than 99% of the original Colt blue finish and shows only the most minor firing and handling wear. The checkered walnut stocks are in near new condition. Markings are perfect. The bore is bright. A unique revolver in exceptional condition.
