Manufactured in 1881, the left side of the barrel has the very scarce "OMNIPOTENT" markings acid etched in an oval panel. Only 174 Model 1878 revolvers were so marked by Colt exclusively for B. Kittredge & Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Benjamin Kittredge was one of the original Colt allies and the leader in advertising for Colt revolvers. At least nine models were labeled with his own trade name including "Peacemaker", "Lightning", "Thunderer", and "Ladies Colt". The top of the barrel is marked: "COLT'S PT. F. A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." , "45 CAL" is stamped on the left front trigger guard bow. The serial number, "4847", is stamped on the grip strap ahead of the lanyard loop and "17" is marked on the loading gate. The accompanying factory letter confirms the revolver's configuration, grips listed as "rubber", Omnipotent marked and that it was shipped to B. Kittredge Co., Cincinnati, Ohio on January 25, 1884 as one of 25. Wilkerson's book "Colt's Double Action Revolver Model of 1878" discusses the Omnipotent marked revolvers in detail and lists all of the shipments. According to the book the last Omnipotent marked invoice was on May 13, 1882. The book lists a January 22, 1881 shipment of "(25) .45 cal., 7 1/2", nickel, rubber, Omnipotent." Writer believes that the "1884" shipment year on the factory letter is simply a misprint and that it should read 1881 which matches Wilkerson's book and the year of manufacture of the revolver. The revolver is complete in a walnut case with red velvet lining, three compartments, and a 28 round bullet block.

Very fine, approximately 75% of the original finish remains with overall scattered thinning and flaking. There are a few minor dings on the cylinder. The underside of the hammer retains much of the bright fire blue finish and there are strong traces on the trigger. The grips are fine with some minor age cracking and a nice mellow aged color. All markings are clear. The action is fine. The case is very good overall. A very nice example of a scarce and very desirable Omnipotent marked Model 1878 revolver.
