Description:

This is a fine example of an early ejectorless Colt M1878 DA revolver. The factory letter shows that it was shipped to Hartley & Graham of N.Y.C. 25 April, 1882. It verifies that the revolver was shipped as currently configured except for the grips which were "not listed" as usual. The revolver has a four inch barrel and is not fitted with an ejector. The revolver has a nickel plated finish with blue hammer top, trigger and screws. The grip frame does not have a lanyard loop. The left side of the barrel has the desirable acid etched oval panel marked: "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER". The top of the barrel is marked: COLT'S PT. M.F.G. Co./HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in two lines. The caliber designation, "44.CF." is stamped on the front trigger guard bow. The full serial number, "7941" is located on the bottom of the grip strap. The rear face of the cylinder is not serial numbered but is stamped with a "Z" inspection or assembly mark. "COLTS DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER" by Wilkerson states that a total of 289 nickel-plated .44-40 Colt M1878 DA Revolvers without ejectors were manufactured by Colt.

Rating Definition:

Excellent (with exception noted below). The revolver retains approximately 95% of the original nickel-plated finish intact. The finish has the usual flaking at the muzzle, edges of the frame and face of the cylinder. About 40% of the niter blue finish is present on the trigger and hammer. The barrel and trigger guard markings are clear and the "COLT FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER" markings and acid etched panel are sharp. The period replacement pearl grips are near excellent. The stocks have yellowed slightly from age and are very attractive. There is an old repair on the left heel and a small chip on the right side. The action is crisp and functions well. An attractive example of a scarce, nickel plated M1878 Sheriff's Model DA Revolver.
