Description:

This is a very nice and desirable mid-war production K98 High Turret sniper rifle. These high turret sniper rifles were probably the most widely used and longest manufactured of all the German sniper rifles. Manufacture of the turret sniper rifles started in 1939 with the development of the low turret models which evolved into the high turret versions in 1941 or 42. These rifles were probably the most time consuming of the WWII German sniper rifles to manufacture because the scopes were hand fitted and soldered to the rings which had to be aligned on the assembled rifle. Notwithstanding this, these rifles were manufactured right to the end of WWII. This model is a very desirable mid-war production, all blued model manufactured by J. P Sauer and Sohns. The top of the rifle is covered by the scope base but it's assumed that it would be coded "CE 43 or 44", because the receiver side wall is marked in script "Mod 98", and both the barrel and receiver carry the correct small "Eagle 37" Waffenamt proofs along with the correct single eagle firing proofs. The underside of the barrel is also correctly marked with the script "ce" indicating manufactured by J.P. Sauer and Sohns. The scope is the correct and desirable WWII version manufactured by the Ajack scope company. It is marked "Ajacks" on the left side of the elevation base along with 4X90 and the right side is numbered 49933. It has the earlier style integral sun shade with the small two drain holes on the bottom side. It has the correct and original rough turned scope rings (the front one is numbered 6585) and correctly soldered on the scope tube. The elevation adjustment on top has the correct range scale that is graduated from 100-800 meters. It has the milled front barrel band with the later stamped middle barrel band with the all milled trigger guard and floorplate. The stock is the later laminated version that has a single "H" Heers Waffenamts on the right side of the buttstock below the takedown bolt. It is complete with an original cleaning rod, front sight cover and brown leather sling.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% of the original wartime blue finish overall, with thinning and browning on the floorplate and trigger guard. The stock and handguard are both in fine condition showing a nice matching color that show an old light cleaning and light varnish. The scope and ring set have 95% of the original WWII blue finish overall with slight wear and rub spots on the front bell of the scope, along with the edges and high spots. The optics are clear and sharp and the elevation knob works correctly. It has matching numbers on the barrel, receiver, trigger guard and floorplate and the barrel bands are unnumbered, the front one being reblued. The bolt is a correct WWII German k98 bolt but it has been very nicely renumbered to match the rifle. All in a very nice example of a scarce J. P. Sauer and Sohns K98 High Turret sniper rifle with a correct Ajacks sniper scope
