Description:

The top of the receiver is marked "U.S./ SPRINGFIELD/ ARMORY/ MODEL 1903" over the serial number and the barrel is marked "U.S.M.C./1-44" over an encircled S". In the early stages of WWII, when the US Army was rearming with the M1, many if not all of these early Model 1903's were overhauled and given to the USMC as a war expedient to help them expand their ranks. This rifle has the distinctive USMC style pre-WWI smooth buttplate that has chisel marks added on the face to provide a gripping surface when shooting. This was developed in the WWI timeframe and many of the WWII USMC rifles were modified like this in the field. The barrel has a parkerized finish that has been cleaned at the breech to a gray patina and features a tangent rear sight mounted above the breech graduated to 2800 meters. The stock is the "S" type without the finger groove forend. It has the "RA" crossed cannon cartouche followed by a boxed "FJA" at the left side above the trigger, and "OG" stamped on the left side of the buttstock. The underside of the grip shows a single encircled "P" proof with various other subinspector marks just forward of the floorplate. It is equipped with sling swivels and a leather military sling.

Rating Definition:

Arsenal rebuilt/assembled with approximately 95% finish remaining overall. The parkerized finish on the barrel has faded and thinned to a smooth grayish patina overall. The blue on the receiver and the remaining components have faded slightly to a brownish patina and show very light overall spotting. The stock is excellent with only minor handling marks overall.
