Description:

While the Confederate Sharps carbine was made in good numbers (over 5200 of them were made), they are rare today. This is due to their use during the Civil War. Almost 100% of them were issued to Confederate troops and they saw service from the day they were made to the end of the war. The first of these were made by Samuel C. Robinson of Richmond in 1862. After about 1900 had been made, Robinson ran into problems with their manufacturer and the Confederate government took over his factory. This is one of the later carbines, made by the government. It is marked only "RICHMOND, VA" on top of the barrel behind the rear sight. Matching serial number appear on the lock plate and upper tang. There is no number on the barrel or receiver. The buttplate and barrel band are brass. The solid blade front sight and solid bar rear sight are typical. There is a carbine swivel bar at the wrist opposite the lock plate and a swivel on the bottom of the butt.

Rating Definition:

Very good. All the metal surfaces have a smooth brown patina with some light pitting on the breech block and ring bar. The buttplate and barrel band have a dark aged patina. The wood is very good overall. The stock has been lengthened a bit and the wood has been sanded and revarnished. There is a minor 3 1/2 inch crack on the left rear of the forearm, a non-professional minor repair on the bottom, a repaired chip on the left wrist at the receiver and overall minor dents and nicks. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
