Description:

This large "deringer" is marked "NEWBURY / ALBANY" on top of barrel. Although the barrel has eight sides and is thus octagonal, it is of unusual shape. The bottom three flats are irregular. The circular alignment lug on the left side of the barrel is brazed and pinned in place. This is the most common size with two known specimens. Frederick D. Newbury of Albany patented a similar action 9 January 1866, #51959, but used the actual patented features only on his smaller deringer. The extractor on this pistol is manually operated instead of automatic. The front sight is a shaped brass bead, the rear a tiny notch in the nose of the hammer. The barrel swivel lug is retained by a pin through the sides of the frame. Forging flaws in barrel have not been polished out. Fewer than 100 of these were made in all varieties.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with a smooth gray patina to the barrel and a mellow mustart patina to the frame. The grips retain most of their varnish. The trigger spring is missing, otherwise the action is fine. PROVENANCE Richard Short 1955, Sam Smith 1955, Frank Sellers 1978 PICTURED Flayderman, 8A-103.8, Eberhart & Wilson, The Deringer in America, Vol 2, p 134
