Description:

An exceptional Civil War Officer's group that consists of: 1) factory engraved Volcanic No. 1 Pocket Pistol, 2) M1850 Foot Officer's Sword and Scabbard, 3) 1855 bayonet, 4) CDV of the officer 5) Brevet promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, 6) First Lieutenant's Commission, 7) Captain's Commission, 8) Major's Commission, 9) Certificate of Disability and 10) Discharge Certificate, 11) Pair of brass spurs. Lieutenant Colonel Charles B. Mann was commissioned in the 74th Indiana Volunteer Infantry in 1862. He served with his regiment through the remainder of the Civil War and fought in numerous actions including the battles of Perryville, Chickamauga, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, the Siege of Atlanta and Sherman's March to the Sea. Wounded on September 19, 1863, Colonel Mann carried the bullet in his left arm until his death in 1908. The 74th Indiana Infantry lost 5 officers and 86 enlisted men killed in action and saw 2 officers and 181 enlisted men die of disease. The Volcanic No.1 Pocket Pistol has a 3.5-inch, .31 caliber, octagon barrel. The sides and top of the brass frame and back strap are factory engraved with simple scroll and floral designs. The hammer and loading lever are casehardened and the grips are varnished walnut. The top of the barrel is marked: "NEW HAVEN CONN./PATENTED FEB. 14. 1854" in two lines. An estimated 850 Volcanic No. 1 Pocket Pistols were manufactured between 1857 and 1860. Colonel Mann's sword is a non-regulation pattern, imported by Schuyler, Hartley and Graham, and manufactured by the Solingen sword maker, Clauberg. The sword generally follows the pattern of the British 1827 Foot Officer Sword. This popular sword pattern was widely used by Federal Officers during the Civil War. The sword has an engraved single fuller 32.5-inch, spear point blade. The blade is etched with highly detailed scroll and floral designs and features a spread eagle with crossed flags and stand of arms on one side and "U.S." with a stand of flags and trophies on the reverse. The ricasso has the Schuyler, Hartley and Graham trademark with a gold inlaid oval proof on one side and "CLAUBERG/SOLINGEN" and the firm's knight trademark on the opposite side. The back of the blade is marked: "IRON PROOF". The four-branch guard is german silver plated and features an eagle and shield with olive branches and arrows. Above the eagle is " E/ PLURIBUS/UNUM" in a ribbon and below the eagle are the letters "U S". The grip is covered in ray skin and wrapped with double strands of silver wire. The iron scabbard has two iron bands and rings and is not decorated. Attached to the sword guard is what appears to be Colonel Mann's hat cord. Colonel Mann's commissions are signed by the Indiana Governor, Oliver P. Morton. The 20-inch X 16-inch Brevet Commission is signed by President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton and is in the original gilded frame. The CDV shows Colonel Mann in field uniform with saber belt. The bayonet is an 1855 with an 18 1/2" triangular blade. The non-regulation spurs have one inch rowels.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The pistol barrel has a smooth, brown, age patina. Markings are sharp. The brass receiver has a mellow patina. The engraving is excellent and the brass surfaces show minimal wear. Generous amounts of the casehardened finish remain on the hammer and loading lever. The grips are very good. There are a number of small, shallow, dents on the bottom of the grips and grip strap and it appears the pistol was used as a hammer in the field. The pistol action has a weak spring, but works otherwise. The sword is in very good condition. The blade is bright with crisp etching. There is some minor pitting and age discoloration at the tip. The ray-skin on the grip is torn near the pommel and has moderate wear. Some of the wire wrap is missing. The scabbard has a smooth, dark, age patina and is free from significant dents. The CDV has some minor chips on the corners. The bayonet is in very good condition with approximately 50% of the reblue remaining and some minor spotting along the top of the blade. There are also numerous minor dings on the socket. The spurs have a dark patina. The documents are slightly faded with some yellowing from age but remain fully legible with clear signatures. This is an outstanding Civil War collection.
