Description:

Marked "LINDSAY’S / YOUNG AMERICA / MANUF’D BY / J. P. LINDSAY - MAN’F’G CO. / NEW-YORK" on the right side of the barrel and "Patent'd FEB. 8. 1859 / PATENT’D. OCT. 9. 1860" on the bottom flat of the barrel. These patents covered the two shot mechanism and the trigger. There is only one barrel but it is designed to fire two shots. The 5/8 inch wide barrel has two nipples at the rear. The right nipple has a flash channel down the raised section on top of the barrel leading to an opening into the chamber about 1-1/8 inches ahead of the breech. This opening would be ahead of a charge loaded at the rear of the barrel and ahead of the special bullet designed to keep the flash from the front load setting off the rear charge. The left nipple fires directly into the rear of the barrel for the rear charge. This required two hammers, one for each nipple. There is only one trigger but its mechanism is designed to fire the right hammer first. The front sight is a brass half moon blade set in the groove on top of the barrel. The rear sight is a notch in the top of the frame between the nipples. Although the quantity made has always been estimated at a few hundred, serial numbers reach four digits. There is scroll engraving around the marking on the right side of the barrel and stand-of-flags engraving on the left. There is a dog engraved on the right side of the frame and a deer on the left.

Rating Definition:

Good. Gray patina on barrel mixed with light pitting. Half of the varnish remains on grips. Mechanically fine, bore is lightly pitted. PROVENANCE Sam Smith
