Description:

This is the finest cased Remington New Model Army Revolver in existence. The aforementioned has the distinguished honor of having been presented to Major General George Meade by the United States Sanitary Commission in 1864. General Meade achieved fame for his victory at Gettysburg and commanded the Federal Army of the Potomac from June 1863 until the end of the Civil War. Meade's victory at Gettysburg on July 3,1863 was the turning point of the Civil War. The United States Sanitary Commission was organized to provide assistance to sick and wounded Federal soldiers and prisoners of war. The revolver has a silver plated barrel, gold plated hammer and cylinder and relief carved two piece ivory grips. The revolver is decorated with intricate, flawlessly executed Germanic scroll engraving on a punch dot background by master engraver Louis Daniel Nimschke. The scroll work covers the barrel side flats, the sides of the frame and recoil shields, bottom of the trigger guard, grip strap and large portions of the backstrap and cylinder. The edge of the cylinder has a dot and scallop border. Flourishes and scroll work are engraved on the barrel flats below the address, on barrel sides at the muzzle and on the sides of the loading lever. The sides of the hammer are engraved with wolf head motifs. The ivory grips have hand carved checkered panels. The left grip is relief carved with a Liberty head above and American flag. The relief carving is very similar to the Liberty Head on the Nimschke-engraved Colt revolver shown on page 182 of "THE BOOK OF COLT ENGRAVING" by R. L. Wilson. The right grip has a silver inlay inscribed: "Presented to/ MAJOR GEN. GEO. C. MEADE,/ by his friends through the / Metropolitan Fair in aid of the / United States Sanitary Commission / New York April 23rd 1864" in six lines. Engraved below the presentation is a ribbon engraved with the motto: "Pro aris et focis". The full revolver serial number "40113" is located on the underside of the barrel and the partial serial number "0113" is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder. The two line Remington address is roll stamped on the top of the barrel in a panel with scroll work on the ends and dot and scallop borders. The revolver is complete with a English style mahogany case with five compartments and lined with dark green velvet. The case contains: (1) A Remington powder flask with brown lacquer body embossed with hunting dogs and game birds on both sides, gilt top and spout and niter blue spring, (2) a blue iron .44 caliber bullet mold with an iron sprue cutter, (3) 250 cap tin of "ELEY BROS" percussion caps with green label and a key. Included with the revolver is a bronze Grand Army of the Republic medal with a bust of General Meade on the front. The front of the medal has the legend: "GEORGE G. MEADE POST NO. 1, DEPARTMENT OF PENNSYLVANIA, G.A.R.", the original hand written duplicate presentation letter to General Meade from the Chairman of the Arms and Trophies? Department of the Metropolitain Fair in aid of the United States Sanitary Commission. The upper left hand corner is hand written " Duplicate / Original sent by Mail" and it is signed by two individuals. The letter comes in the original envelope hand written on the outside "Duplicate" and General Meade's name and address. The revolver was formerly in the estate of the great grandson of General George Meade.

Rating Definition:

Excellent plus. The revolver appears to be unfired and has more than 98% of the original delicate silver and gold plated finish intact. Finish wear is limited to some very minor finish loss on the edges of the barrel flats and some minor flaking on the edges of the backstrap and the upper left corner of the frame. The cylinder and percussion nipples have no sign of firing wear or flash pitting. The gold-plated percussion nipples are in perfect condition. The engraved surfaces are in perfect condition. The ivory grips are in excellent plus condition with crisp checkering and relief carving. The grips have no cracks or chips and show only a slight and very attractive age patina. The silver presentation plate on the right grip is in outstanding condition with sharp inscriptions. The revolver is in immaculate condition and shows only very minor storage wear and age tarnish. The case exterior is in excellent condition with minor storage marks. The green velvet interior is excellent with no torn fabric and only some minor compression marks in the bottom from the revolver cylinder and butt. The powder flask is excellent with about 95% of the lacquer and 90-95% of the gilt finish intact. The bullet mold shows much original blue and minor surface spotting on the interior. The percussion cap tin is in very good condition; the lacquer body has moderate finish wear and the label is about 80% intact. This is in every respect an outstanding and historic Remington New Model Army Revolver with Nimschke engraving and relief carved grips, incredible condition and a presentation to one of the most important Civil War generals. This is an important and one-of-a-kind revolver.
