Description:

This is a second model carbine as manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls Mass. There were approximately 20,000 total made between 1860 and 1865 and were used by Cavalry units during the Civil War. Among these were the 9th and 11th Indiana and 11th Tennessee Cavalry units. The left side of the receiver is marked "EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27. 1851. / DEC. 6. 1859." The right side is marked "MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS." The left side barrel flat is marked with a small "S" inspector mark, the left side of the rear sight is marked "N" and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. It has the regulation cavalry sling bar and ring on the left side of the receiver and the left side of the buttstock has "AJN" and "JM" inspector cartouches.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains approximately 80% of the thinning blue with some pin prick pitting on the muzzle, some light spotting and scattered areas of light pitting under the finish. The bottom of the action and lower tang show generous amounts of the original casehardening colors and the left side of the action retains some of the dull casehardening colors with the remaining area and buttplate having a smooth grayish mottled patina. The stock is excellent with a few scattered minor dings and dents and crisp cartouches. All other markings are clear and crisp. The action is fine.
