Description:

The Model 1885 was the first single shot rifle that Winchester manufactured. Manufactured in 1889 and features a heavy #4 octagon barrel with a folding combination Beach front sight, three leaf rear sight and mid range tang mounted peep sight. The top barrel flat is marked with the standard two line Winchester marks and 40-EX. The serial number is marked on the lower tang and "PAT. OCT. 7TH 79" is marked just behind the trigger. Blue barrel with casehardened thick side receiver, lever and buttplate. Smooth Schnabel forearm with ebony insert and straight grip stock with a steel crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The barrel has a smooth plum patina with a small area of light spotting and a couple dings. The receiver retains approximately 30% of the original fading case colors, with the lever and buttplate having a smooth mottled gray patina. The wood is very good with most of the original varnish remaining and overall scattered minor dings and dents. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is fine. The bore shows some minor oxidation and good rifling. Purchased at an estate sale through Mare Walz and Sam "The Picker", from the Will Hoffeld Collection.
