The opposite side is marked: "EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27, 1851 / DEC. 6, 1859" followed by "1873". The lower tang is marked with the serial number. The Model 1873 Maynard rifles used a cartridge with a very thick rim which could be used to extract them from the barrel. The rifle has a heavy, half octagon barrel with forearm and a dove tailed German silver blade front sight. The rear sight has been removed and there is a tang sight. Mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with an iron crescent buttplate. The rifle is complete with an extra 28" part octagon 36 caliber barrel with a checkered forearm, globe front and fixed iron rear sights. Including the lever.

Rating Definition:

Good. The metal surfaces have a dark brown mottled patina with a couple of small areas of moderate pitting on the forward area of the barrel and a few scattered small areas of minor pitting overall. The wood is excellent as freshened with most of the varnish remaining, a small gouge in the forearm and overall a few minor dings and dents. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine. The extra barrel is good with thinning finish remaining and some minor pitting at the muzzle. The forearm is good with the checkering worn smooth and having a hand rubbed patina. The bore is fair with pitting and the extra barrel has a good bore.
