Description:

Johnson manufactured approximately 10,000 Model 1842 pistols from 1853 to 1855. Marked "US / I.N. JOHNSON" on the lock plate in front of the crude period replacement hammer, "MIDDTN / CONN / 1854" vertically at the rear. There is no date marked on the barrel tang. The left rear of the barrel is marked "JCB / P" and "STEEL" followed by "B" on the left rear flat. Blade front sight, brass mountings, iron swivel type ram rod with button head and mounted with a one piece walnut stock with two cartouches on the left flat. The bottom is stamped with a "V" and "2" and the left flat is stamped with an "11". The right side grip area is stamped "1 BA". A crude "TB" and "X" have been carved into the left flat and "AD" on the bottom of the forend.

Rating Definition:

Good as assembled (see above). The metal surfaces have a smooth gray patina with some minor pitting on the bolster and surrounding barrel. The brass has an aged patina with a few minor dings in the trigger guard and buttcap. The stock is good with the above mentioned carvings and a few minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
