Description:

There were only two U.S. Armories at the time, Springfield and Harpers Ferry. The latter was closer to Washington and thus seemed to get the job of making the new items that the ordnance and other military figures dreamed up. Only 4096 of these were made from 1806 to 1808, when they were discontinued. Of the total production of four thousand, only ninety-six are known to exist. The lock is marked with a large spread eagle and shield over "U.S." forward of the cock and "HARPERS/FERRY/1807" vertically at the rear of the lock plate. Single key iron fastened barrel properly marked with a sunken "eagle head/P" proof and serial numbered "944" with a sunken "US" between them. Brass mounted furniture. The barrel is not fitted with a sight. The left side of the stock is properly marked with "U/JS" cartouche. The hickory ramrod has been fitted with a flared brass tip and a steel cleaning tip.

Rating Definition:

Very good as reconverted to flintlock. The barrel displays patches of pin prick pitting mostly at the muzzle and the pan with some overall collector type handling marks. The lock plate, pan and frizzen are all very good showing only minor isolated pin prick pitting. The brass mounted furniture is very fine and has taken on a even mellow patina. The wood is fine and the edges are still crisp and defined showing only very minor pressure marks and collector type storage wear. The ram rod is good. A very rare pistol in good condition for a low survival rate and 200 plus years of existence. Provenance: The Will Hoffeld collection, purchased at Las Vegas Show on February 1, 1996, from Larry Shelton.
