Description:

This is an example an early extraction system that was covered by Birmingham gunmaker John Thomas' English patent No. 779 of 13 March 1869. The cases are simultaneously extracted by rotating the barrel and pulling it forward about 1 inch out of the frame. The frame has an unusually long opening to allow the barrel to move forward while pulling the 5-shot cylinder with it. This is accomplished by pressing the barrel release bottom on the right side of the frame and rotating the knob protruding from the bottom barrel flat to the right. A star-like extractor fixed to the breech holds the cartridges by their rims until they fall free. Another unusual feature is a screw-in safety bolt on the left side of the frame, behind the hammer. Screwing in the safety one turn immobilizes the half-cocked hammer. The top of the flat frame is marked "FLETCHER / WESTGATE ST GLOUCESTER." and the Thomas patent number is marked over the serial number on the left side of the frame. There are Birmingham proof marks on the underside of the barrel and near each cylinder notch. Blade front and notch rear sights, loading gate, butt lanyard ring and fitted with a one-piece smooth ivory grip. Complete with a blue fabric lined wooden case with an E. Fletcher maker's label on the inside of the lid and containing: 1) An oilier. 2) A screwdriver. 3) A key. 4) A cleaning rod. 5) 28 cartridges. Included is a one-page technical article entitled "Early Revolver Extraction Systems" from "The American Rifleman", Feb. 1977, page 38.

Rating Definition:

Good with the metal surfaces exhibiting a mottled silver-gray patina. There are a few hairline cracks on the right side of the grip (possibly a repair), otherwise the grip is very good with some minor handling marks. The case is very good with some minor exterior handling marks. The label is clear and complete with some minor age wrinkles. From the Will Hoffeld collection, purchased at Disneyland Hotel Gun Show in 1975.
