Description:

Charles Baird manufactured percussion half stock rifles and target pistols in Chittenden, Vermont circa 1850 to 1865. This particular example is known as a "Buggy Rifle" and features an 11 inch octagon barrel with a false muzzle, globe front sight and a windage adjustable rear peep sight. The top of the barrel at the breech is marked "C. BAIRD". Side mount hammer and bolster with a clean out screw. Mahogany ram rod with a brass ends and fitted smooth two piece varnished walnut grips and a burl walnut detachable stock with a brass crescent buttplate. "HM" or "WH" is scratched into the inside of each grip panel.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The metal surfaces have a smooth brown patina with scattered traces of original blue finish on the barrel. The grips and stock are excellent with almost all of the original varnish remaining and overall a few scattered minor dings and dents. The barrel marking remains crisp and clear. The action is tight as new. Overall a very nice "Buggy Rifle". From the Will Hoffeld collection, purchased from Earl Woolman in 1975.
