Description:

The sword has a 30 inch, wide single fuller blade, with niter blue panel and washed gold engraving. The hilt has a cast brass, silver-plated, eagle head pommel knuckle bow with down-turned quillion. The ivory grip has a checkered panel. The langets are decorated with a cast Eagle and Shield motif. The leather scabbard has silver-plated brass throat suspension band and tip. The scabbard has two suspension rings and a hanger end.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The blade has 80- 85% of the niter blue finish on the panel overall. The remainder of the blade has scattered pitches of surface rust. The hilt has a dark patina with traces of silver plating in protected areas. The scabbard is in poor condition; the stitching on the center seam is rolled and there are several taped repairs on the body. The saber know is European and not original to the sword. Guard shows traces of the original silver, with light cracking and fraying of the portapee and minimal wear on the ivory. Sheath is fair, with tape repairs above the tip, lost stitching, and 60% of the original silver, showing a mixed age patina. From the Will Hoffeld Collection, purchased in 1975 from Jack's Antiques of Berkeley, California.
