Description:

Thirty-three inch blade, acid etched with "U.S." on the left side and eagle carrying a "E PLURIBUS UNUM" banner on the right, with "IRON PROOF" on the spine and no visible makers marks. Brass guard, engraved through with an eagle and shield design, eagle head quillion, scroll and laurel designs on the pommel and a silver finished brass grip in a twist pattern with simulated wire wrap. Gold and blue saber knot. Browned steel scabbard, with engraved brass fittings and an inscription below the throat; "Char. C Lamb/ 1st Lieut, 30th Mich. Inf/ -Presented-/ by his Company/ Jan. 1st 1864". According to archival information (photocopies provided), Charles Lamb mustered into the 30 Regiment, Michigan Infantry on December 24, 1864, with a Lieutenant's commission from the Governor, and was promoted to Captain by April of the following year.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with some mild spotting and strong etching on the blade, dark patina on the brass, and traces of the original silver in the protected areas. Sheath is good, with a dark brown and blue patina on the steel and an aged color on the fittings. From the Will Hoffeld Collection, acquired from Denny Foreman in May of 1972.
