Description:

Deluxe model 1902 saber with 32 inch thin single fuller blade. Both sides of the blade are floral etched and incorporate American military symbols such as crossed flags and cannons. "US" W etched on the left side and "Harcourt Hervey" in Old English lettering is etched on the right. The saber has a cast Eagle head pommel with ruby eyes. The tarnished silver plated sheath has ornate cast engraved carrying ring bands and drag. The obverse side of the scabbard is engraved; "Colonel Harcourt Hervey / from / Officers of the 160th Infantry" between the carrying rings. Commissioned as a second lieutenant on Nov. 29th 1916, Harcourt Hervey began his military career with extensive service in France during World War I. He commanded the First Ammunition trains, the Sixth Field Artillery and then the Fifth Field Artillery, and reached the rank of lieutenant colonel by the age of 26. He received a number of citations for meritorious service from General Pershing, as well as divisional, brigade and regimental citations. For his work in the Soissons Offensive he received the Croix de Guerre. Resigning from the service in 1920, Harcourt entered the California National Guard in 1922 to command the 160th Infantry, known as "Los Angeles' Own." He would advance to the rank of Major General, and would see overseas duty during World War II. Other awards that the general received include the Purple Heart, Medal of Merit (State of California), Philippine Liberation Medal and Bronze Star (2 awards).

Rating Definition:

Fine. The blade has a clear and crisp etching. The hilt is wire plating, a few light handling marks on the grip and some minor-moderate flaking on the knot and portapee. The sheath is very good with heavy loss of plating on the tip and bands and some light flaking overall. The inscription is clear. From the Will Hoffeld collection, purchased from the grandson of Major General Hacourt Hervey in 1975.
