Description:

This earlier model was manufactured from 1876 to 1880. The top of the barrel is marked with the one line Merwin Hulbert address and patent dates and the left side with the Hopkins & Allen address. The left side of the frame, below the cylinder, is marked "CALIBRE / WINCHESTER 1873" the designation for 44-40 and the serial number is marked on the butt. The revolver has simple patterns and scroll engraving on the barrel sides, frame, cylinder flats and upper back strap. The left rear of the frame has a Mexican type eagle and the right side has an ocean cliff scene. Blade front and frame notch rear sights, scoop flutes and fitted with smooth two piece pearl grips

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains approximately 50% original finish with some flaking mixed with smooth gray patina. The right grip panel is fair with a large chip on the heel and the left panel is very good with a couple minor chips and minor handling marks. The lanyard ring is missing. The engraving is clear. Part of the left side barrel address is faint, otherwise the markings are clear. The action is fine. Purchased from Nick Dirksen in Downey, CA1977, and part of the Will Hoffeld collection.
