Description:

Manufactured 1879 to 1887 with a total production of only 977, this is one of the rarest Smith & Wesson firearms produced. Serial numbered from 1 to 977, the serial number on this rifle would indicate very early production. This scarce and unusual revolving rifle was sometimes referred to as the Smith & Wesson "Buntline Special" in the combination of a long barreled revolver with attaching shoulder stock. This Model 320 was manufactured using the frame, cylinder and basic action of the New Model No. 3 revolver with some minor differences in the hammer and trigger, with the barrel being made of two pieces. A slot is cut into the butt and a hole drilled in the back strap to accommodate the shoulder stock. The rifle features an 18 inch barrel with a interchangeable front blade sight and two leaf folding rear sight. The rifle is chambered for the 320 Smith & Wesson cartridge. The top of the rib is marked with the two line address/patent dates. The matching serial number appears on the butt, cylinder and barrel latch. The barrel is fitted with a checkered hard rubber forearm with a "wood grain" pattern and the S&W monogram. The grips are matching with S&W monograms in a circle at the tops. The stock is smooth with blue finished attaching iron and a checkered black hard rubber buttplate with S&W monogram. Complete with an original wooden canvas covered case with felt lining, glass stopper bottle and extra front globe sight.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle retains approximately 85% of the original finish with thinning on the frame, smooth gray patina on the trigger guard and grip straps, a few scattered minor scratches. The cylinder blue has been partially refinished. The hammer retains strong (approximately 25%) original bright case colors mixed with smooth gray. There is a visible bulge in the barrel approximately 6 1/2" back from the muzzle. The grips and forearm are excellent with light handling marks and sharp checkering. The stock is near excellent with approximately 90% of the original bright blue finish on the attaching iron and scattered minor dings and dents on the wood. The case is fair. The lid is completely detached from the body of the case. The fabric covering on the case exterior is deteriorating and some of the metal flashing is loose. The leather straps and handle to the case are missing and the remaining leather is very fragile. The lining is about good with the usual pilling of the fabric, a deep gouge in the wood from the rear sight and some wear and light stains. A nice, rare Smith & Wesson Model 320 Revolving Rifle with stock and case.
