Description:

Smith & Wesson Second Model Schofield revolver manufactured in 1877. The revolver has a high-polish blue finish on the barrel, cylinder and frame. The trigger guard and hammer are color case-hardened and the two-piece walnut grips are oil-finished. The revolver has a barrel catch with scooped center and knurled edges which distinguish it from First Model Schofield revolvers and has a dark, oil-quenched, case-hardened finish. The serial number, "8301", is located on the revolver butt and the rear face of the cylinder. The "U.S." property mark is stamped on the bottom of the butt. Small "P" proof marks are located on the rear face of the cylinder below the serial number, on the inside of the frame and on the bottom of the barrel lug. Small "W" Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped next to the "P" proof marks in all three locations. The lower left side of the barrel lug is roll-stamped with the two line S&W patent markings with Maltese Crosses at either end. The right side of the barrel lug is roll-stamped: "+SCHOFIELD'S Pats JUNE 20th 71. APR 22nd 73+" in a single line. The lower section of the left grip is stamped with the date "1877" above the Ordnance Inspector's script initials "DAL" (Lieutenant David A. Lyle). The lower portion of the right grip is stamped with the script initials "CW" in a rectangle (Ordnance Sub-Inspector Charles Woodman). Smith & Wesson manufactured 5,285 Second Model Schofield revolvers under government contract. These revolvers were issued to both regular Army and state militia units. The Army Schofield revolvers saw extensive use in the Indian Wars and the militia revolvers remained in government service through the Spanish American War.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The revolver retains approximately 75% of the bright original, high polish, blue finish. Wear is concentrated primarily along the sides of the barrel and on the edges of the cylinder and frame. The case-hardened hammer, trigger and barrel catch retain 90% or more of the original case colors. The grips are in very-fine condition with light to moderate handling wear. The inspection marks on the sides of the grip remain legible. The bore is in perfect condition. This is a very fine example of an important Indian War handgun.
