This is an example of a Winchester Second Model 1876 Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1879. The rifle has the distinctive dust cover guide that is attached to the receiver by two screws and the early pattern dust cover with checkered oval thumb-print at the top. The rifle has an extra length full octagon barrel and full length magazine tube. The barrel is fitted with a "Rocky Mountain" front sight with nickel silver blade and a non-factory, fixed, period buckhorn rear sight. The crescent steel butt plate has a sliding brass trap. The rifle has a blued barrel and magazine and a casehardened forearm cap, receiver, hammer, loading lever, and buttplate. The stock and forearm are straight-grained black walnut. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTERS-REPEATING ARMS.NEW HAVEN.CT. /KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860". The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1876" in fancy script. The serial number, "10226" is stamped on the lower receiver tang between the loading lever latch and the tang screw.

Good. The barrel retains approximately half of the original blue finish. The magazine, forearm cap, receiver, hammer, loading lever and buttplate have a silver-gray patina. The receiver and dust cover have been lightly cleaned and there are traces of very fine pitting on the sides of the receiver in front of the side plates. The loading gate has about 40% of the original blue finish. The butt plate has the usual slight scratches and handling marks. The barrel markings are crisp. The forearm and stock have been sanded and re-finished. There is a repaired, hair-line crack in the right side of the stock at the wrist and a small chip along the right side of the upper receiver tang. The serial number is barely legible due to the aforementioned work. Mechanically fine.
