Description:

This is an example of a Winchester Third Model 1866 rifle that was manufactured in 1872. The rifle has a full octagon barrel with fixed front sight with German silver blade and a two-position, Henry style, folding leaf rear sight. Factory sling swivels are fitted to the stock and brass forearm cap. The brass buttplate has a hinged trap. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16.1860.". The serial number, "118110" is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger. The stock and forearm are highly figured walnut with an oil finish.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel has a gray-brown patina with scattered age discoloration, some minor light pitting and some minor dents and scratches. There are several minor indentations in the top barrel flat in the vicinity of the legend. The barrel markings are very sharp. The rear sight is slightly bent and shows heavy service wear. The brass receiver has tight side plate joints with scattered minor dents and scratches. The loading gate, hammer and loading lever have a dark patina with some scattered discoloration and surface corrosion. The brass buttplate is in fine condition with minor surface wear. The stock and forearm are refinished replacements and are in fine condition. This is a solid example of one of the most important and historic of all Winchester lever action rifles.
