A) D.H. Hilliard Under Hammer Percussion Target Rifle

OC - FINE- all original parts; over 30% original finish, sharp lettering, numerals and design on metal and wood; minor marks in wood.

Description:

The barrel is marked "D.H. HILLIARD / CORNISH N.H." and "NO 1483" on the top left flat. The bottom of the barrel is marked :"6 2 G.H. NUTT 1 7/8". There is a barrel mounted adjustable bar type peep sight with a globe and pin front sight. The muzzle is turned for a bullet starter. There is some light engraving at the finial of the barrel tang, with three ramrod pipes soldered to the bottom of the barrel, one is missing. The stock has an iron trigger guard, crescent buttplate and a toe plate with a silver inlay of a squirrel on a branch on the oval molded cheekpiece. The consignor notes that in Hilliard's "day book" a February 22, 1856 entry credited Nutt's account with a $1.50 and has mentioned that the Nutt family lived near by and did work in the shop.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel is a smooth plum brown with slight high edge wear. The stock is very good with moderate wear.

OD - VERY GOOD- all original parts; none to 30% original finish; original metal surfaces smooth with all edges sharp; clear lettering, numerals and design on metal; wood slightly scratched or bruised.

NPRF - NON-PROFESSIONALLY REFINISHED/COLD BLUE, ETC.

Description:

The maker's stamp is nearly illegible but seems to be "KENDALL / ???? VT". The front sight is a dove tailed bead sight and the rear a simple "V" notch sight. The barrel tang is marked "SMITH'S / IMPROVED / PATENT / STUD / LOCK". There are three ramrod pipes soldered to the underside of the barrel. The stock has a brass trigger guard and buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The barrel is mostly a smooth brown with areas of silver gray. The stock has had a coat of splotchy cherry stain applied. Mechanically fine.
