Description:

Manufactured somewhere between 1908 and 1926 this shotgun features two ivory beads on a solid matte rib, the left barrel is marked "FLUID COMPRESSED STEEL" and the right is marked "SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH", 2 3/4 chambers, choked modified/modified, with fine scroll on the breech end of the barrels and fences and a jeweled barrel flat and lugs. The action has a tang mounted manual safety/selector, engraved break lever and single trigger with fine English scroll on the action including "ITHACA GUN Co." in banner on both sides, a rooster and hen pheasant in gold inlay on the left, two gold inlay quail in a field scene on the right, a marsh scene with two gold inlay ducks one in flight and one on the water as well as gold inlay marsh grass and a hunting dog in gold inlay on the engraved trigger guard. Finely checkered pistol grip with fancy scalloped border, gold initial shield, hard rubber grip cap and a vented Hawkins recoil pad. The flats are also finely checkered with a scalloped border, the splinter forearm features an engraved push button release, ebony insert on the forend and is finely checkered. The extra 26" barrel has serial numbers that match the shotgun with two ivory beads on a flat matte solid rib, choked improved cylinder/improved cylinder, a finely checkered beaver tail forearm, with an ebony insert and engraved push button release. Length of pull 13 5/8", drop at comb 1 3/8" and a drop at the heel of 2 1/4". Research revealed that Sir Joseph Whitworth (1803-1887) was an English born Mechanical Engineer who specialized in firearms. Sir Whitworth rifled guns in the United States during the Civil War and once produced a 12-pounder breech-loading rifle that hit a target from 4.7 miles away. Sir Joseph Whitworth's cannons were used at various Battles during the Civil War including Gettysburg and Vicksburg. Sir Joseph Whitmore also was the inventor of the fluid compressed steel method and established a factory in Manchester to produce it, hence his name on the barrel.

Rating Definition:

Fine as period refurbished. The barrel retains most of the dark blue finish with the breech end engraving being clear and crisp. The receiver holds approximately 95% of the blue finish with some areas faded to smooth gray on the forward portion. All of the gold inlay still exists on the wildlife scenes and the engraving is clear on all faces and the trigger guard. The wood remains excellent with very fine, crisp checkering and some few overall minor handling marks. The extra barrel also holds virtually all of its blue with a slight ding on the bottom left muzzle while the finely checkered forearm is excellent overall with the checkering remaining crisp as is the engraved button release, the ebony insert has slight chips on the base with a small crack running along the left side. Needs minor work as the single selector trigger does not fire both barrels..
