Description:

Produced in the 1800s, this is a Medieval-type punishment mask. While made in the style of a protective helmet, a mask like this was worn as punishment for an offense such as gossip or slander. Similar in design to an army helmet, a pair of side-hinged panels close across the cheeks and under the chin, with a full face mask hinged at the top closing on top, allowing the mask to be secured with one latch and completely enclose the head. The face mask is formed into a semi-grotesque smiling face, with a number of small holes cut in, more for decoration than for ventilation. A pair of long, curling goat-style horns are positioned on top, extending out about 5 inches. When in full effect, the side panels would restrict jaw movement, rendering speech difficult or impossible, and leave the wearer in a great deal of discomfort. Weighs in at 5.8 pounds.

Rating Definition:

Very good. Some brown oxidization is visible inside the mask, and the exterior shows a dark iron patina with some brown spotting and dings. Would make a fine addition to any display collection of Medieval pieces.
