Approximately 7,000 of these Pepperboxes were manufactured from 1851 to 1854 and was an improved version of the George Leonard Jr. patent. Marked "ROBBINS & LAWRENCE CO", "WINDSOR.VT" and "PATENT. 1849." on three adjacent barrel flutes. The serial number is marked on the rear of the barrels and on the left side of the frame under the grip. Each grip panel is numbered to another gun. The front strap is hand marked "N4434 / 4306". This pistol is fitted with the 3 5/8" five shot barrel cluster that unscrews to load and tips down for capping. Standard broad scroll engraving on the breech end of the barrels, frame and fitted with smooth two piece walnut grips.

Very good. The barrel cluster retains strong traces of original finish mixed with a smooth brown patina. There are strong traces of original finish on the left side of the frame in the protected area above the trigger. There is some minor pitting on the breech end of the barrels and on the frame. There is some play in the barrel hinge. The action doesn't cycle. The grips are about good with several minor dings and nicks on the right panel and overall minor chips in the varnish and minor dents and handling marks. The engraving is clear and the marks are clear and crisp.

As described in "A" except marked "PATENT 1849" in one flute, "ROBBINS & LAWRENCE CO" in the next and "WINDSOR, VT." in the third reading from breech to muzzle. The serial number is marked on the rear face of the barrels and on the butt. The grips are mismatched.

Good. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina with some small scattered areas of minor spotting. The latch is broken and the hinge is slightly loose. The action does not function. The grips are very good with much of the varnish remaining, a few chips in the varnish and a few minor dents. The markings and engraving are clear.
