Description:

The Grafton made pepperboxes were the first Allen's production and among the scarcest. This standard size pistol features the early "quick drop" grip which has a very sharp angle at which it is set to the frame. This pistol is a Third (or Late) Type made without a nipple shield, with integral nipples and the narrow back strap. The top of the hammer is marked "ALLEN'S PATENT" and "A.W. SPIES" on left side. Spies was a dealer in New York City. The matching serial number is marked on the barrel between two of the nipples, on the left side of the frame under the grip and on the inside of each grip panel. There are no markings on the barrel. Standard broad scroll engraving on the frame, hammer slot for sighting and fitted with smooth walnut grips with German silver oval inlays (spangles). This pistol is pictured and identified by serial number on page 61 of Jack Dunlap's "American British & Continental Pepperbox Firearms".

Rating Definition:

Good. The metal surfaces have a smooth brown and gray patina with a small amount of flash pitting around the nipples. The nipples appear original. The grips are good with a few minor dings and dents. The engraving is clear. The hammer markings are sharp and clear. The action is very good.
